Greece faces a serious problem with xenophobic and racist attacks against asylum seekers, migrants and other minority groups, a new report has claimed.
The 2017 review from the UN-backed Racist Violence Recording Network on Wednesday claimed violence against vulnerable people in Athens from organized racists had increased.
It claimed “hit-and-run” tactics are being used to harass migrants on Greek streets, with clear premeditation in many cases.

On the islands also, there have been attacks, with the NGO reporting gang assaults on migrants in Leros.
The report compiled a list of 102 violent incidents in 2017, an increase of seven on 2016.

Wednesday’s report is an insight into a series of violent incidents involving Greece’s ultra-right this year already. Last week, a shadowy far-right group called Krypteia claimed an arson attack on an Afghan community center in the heart of Athens.
Five people were injured, three hospitalized, when a gang of suspected neo-Nazis attacked an anti-fascist center in the Greek port of Piraeus in late February.
The attackers stormed the Favela Free Social Center in the Piraeus suburb of Keratsini, wielding iron bars and setting off flares.
Seven people are also being investigated for being members of a neo-Nazi cell calling itself Combat 18 Hellas. They are accused of a number of offences, including running a criminal organization.
