Prosecutor Appeals Acquittal Decision for Metropolitan over Hate Speech

The Aigio Public Prosecutor on Monday appealed a court decision that acquitted the Metropolitan of Kalavryta and Aigialeia Amvrosios on charges of racist comments  against homosexuals.
The Aigio court that tried Amvrosios found him not guilty of remarks he made about homosexuals and the phrase, “If I were allowed to carry a gun and use it, I would solve the problem.”
The charges against Amvrosios were brought in 2015 after anti-homosexual comments he wrote in his personal blog. One of them was urging the faithful to spit on homosexuals wherever they see them, while on another he called gays “abominations of nature”.
The comments violated a series of articles in the penal code, following a lawsuit filed against him for hatred against homosexuals by LGBT groups.
The Metropolitan’s acquittal last week caused a stir, even among SYRIZA cabinet members and MPs. Especially after Amvrosios appeared unrepentant, saying that “God did not create abnormal men”.
The case will be brought back to court.
Amvrosios: “Freedom of speech is only for SYRIZA members, gays and anarchists”
The Metropolitan lashed against the public prosecutor’s decision to bring him back to court.
“Is there freedom of speech in Greece? Of course there is! But it is only for SYRIZA members, homosexuals and anarchists! Long live democracy!” he wrote in his blog.
In his text, the Metropolitan called homosexuals “slaves of sin” who try to impose on the Greek society a way of sinful and non-Christian life.”
Amvrosios further condemns homosexuals as “slaves of their passions,” who kiss in the mouth “even inside the Greek Parliament.”
