EU-Turkey Summit Agenda: Greek Soldiers, Aegean, Cyprus EEZ

Greece expects to hear Turkey’s position on the the two Greek soldiers issue and the provocations in the Aegean and Cyprus’ EEZ, during the EU-Turkey Summit in Varna, Bulgaria on Monday evening.
Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras said that he is assured that European leaders will  touch on Turkey‘s aggressive behavior and hostile comments made by President Recep Tayyip Erdogan regarding sovereign rights in the Aegean and Cyprus’ exclusive economic zone (EEZ).
Tsipras also expects that the issue of the two Greek soldiers held illegally in Turkey after accidentally crossing the border between the two countries by accident, will be raised during the summit.
President of the European Council Donald Tusk, President of the European Commission Jean-Claude Juncker, Prime Minister of Bulgaria Boyko Borissov and the Turkish President will meet in Varna to discuss Turkey-EU relations.
Before heading for Bulgaria, Erdogan said Turkey’s EU accession remained a strategic goal for Ankara. However, the recent condemnation of Turkey’s behavior in the Aegean, Cyprus’ EEZ and Syria’s Afrin by the European Council do not point towards that direction.
Greek and international analysts say that it is unlikely for Turkey to become an EU member. However, the summit might be a step for better cooperation regarding the refugee and migrant issue, something that the EU aims at.
Turkey will ask for the abolition of the visa requirement for Turkish citizens to visit Europe and a better customs deal.
“We are neighbors and we need to find a way to talk to each other openly and cooperate in areas of common interest,” said European Council President Donald Tusk prior to the meeting.
