Thessaloniki Rally for Captive Greek Soldiers Called for March 25

A rally in solidarity with the two Greek soldiers held in Turkey for inadvertently straying into the country is being organized for March 25 — Greek Independence Day — in Thessaloniki.
The demonstration organized by various groups through social media is scheduled to coincide with the festivities to commemorate Greece’s national day.
In a Facebook post they are calling “all patriots” to gather “in protest at the continued captivity of the soldiers” who are being held in a jail in the Turkish border town of Edirne.
The rally will take place in front of the emblematic statue of Alexander the Great, where a massive demonstration took place in February against the use of the term ‘Macedonia’ by FYROM.
A rally in support of the two Greek soldiers was also held in the Greek border town of Orestiada on March 11.
On Thursday it emerged that the soldiers will spend at least one month behind bars.
A state-run Anadolu Agency report claimed lawyers of the two Greek junior officers are scheduled to meet a Turkish judge on March 30 to discuss the case. Until then, the pair will remain in custody.
Lieutenant Angelos Mitretodis and Sergeant Dimitris Kouklatzis were arrested for entering Turkey at the Evros border after they lost their way due to heavy snowfall during a routine patrol on March 1.
