Fresh Clashes Break Out at Greek Property Auctions (video)

Trouble has broken out in downtown Athens in another clash between riot police and campaigners against auctions of foreclosed properties.
According to reports, some demonstrators in the Exarchia district pelted police with eggs and trash before attempting to gain entry to a notary’s office to halt sales.
Police responded, with reports of five protesters being left injured, including a photojournalist covering the story.
Video from the scene by local media show scuffles and an angry standoff between some protesters and police.
Last week saw police fire tear gas in a similar protest in Athens. One person was hurt as protesters, including a former SYRIZA minister and at least two former lawmakers from the governing party, attempted to break the police line and storm the notary’s office where online auctions were taking place.
Greece’s government has committed to 10,000 real estate auctions in 2018 and 40,000 auctions per year over the next three years, from 2019 to 2021.
The emotive issue of home auctions, and especially primary residencies, has been a thorny issue for the government of Alexis Tsipras.
