More Ships Travel to Tense Cypriot Waters

Two research vessels chartered by an ExxonMobil led joint venture are on their way to Cyprus, amid ongoing tension in the region with Turkey’s navy.
One vessel is sailing from Greece and another from Haifa, Israel according to a Kathimerini report on Sunday.
The presence of two additional research ships in an area which has seen Turkish warships impede other energy companies from operating has worsened fears of conflict in the eastern Mediterranean.
The two vessels will operate in Cyprus’ exclusive economic zone (EEZ) at the same time as military vessels from the U.S., Israel, and Greece undertake exercises in the region.
Turkish warships are also present as the Turkish Cypriot authorities say they may begin unilateral exploration work of their own in the absence of an agreement with the internationally recognized Cypriot government.
The U.S. has already denied that its military is in the region to escort the ExxonMobil ships, but has insisted that Cyprus has the right to operate in its own EEZ.
