Pictures on Mobile Phones of 2 Greek Soldiers Eliminate Suspicions of Espionage

The photographs found on the mobile phones of the two Greek soldiers arrested for entering Turkey territory eliminates previous suspicions of entering a Turkish military zone and espionage.
Lieutenant Aggelos Mitretodis and Sergeant Dimitrios Kouklatzis lost their orientation in bad weather conditions while patrolling the border near the town of Kastanies and ended up in Turkish territory, while they were following footprints in the snow, as they told Turkish authorities.
Initially, Turkish authorities said that the Greek soldiers are facing espionage charges for spying across the border and sending records on their phones to their superiors. However, after searching their mobile phones, they did not find any incriminating photographs of Turkish military facilities or zones.
It has been reported that the military facilities depicted in photographs that were stored in the two soldiers’ mobile phones were not Turkish but Greek, apparently from the units where the Lieutenant and the Sergeant serve in Greece.
The Greek soldiers are now detained in Edirne, where they were taken in front of the prosecutor. Their detention is based on the charge of “first-degree violation of trespassing a restricted military area”.
The two soldiers will be tried on Monday. The Greek consul in Edirne has been notified to provide the necessary assistance to the two men.
