US Ambassador to Greece: We are Following Closely the Situation of the 2 Soldiers Remanded in Turkey

“The United States is following closely the case of the arrest of the two Greek soldiers,” said U.S. Ambassador to Greece Geoffrey Pyatt on Friday, regarding the two soldiers who were stranded in Turkey and arrested.
The U.S. ambassador spoke to Kathimerini newspaper about the issue during his participation in the Delphi Economic Forum. He also said he had a conversation about the incident with the Assistant Secretary of State.
Asked if he is worried about the possibility of an “accident” between Greece and Turkey, the ambassador replied that he is worried about an incident of “unintentional” conflict.
Speaking about Turkish provocations in the Aegean, Pyatt stressed that the U.S. understands the Greek side regarding the obstructions posed by Turkey in the mining operations in the Cyprus EEZ.
“The U.S. position was clear. It is a matter of principle that the people of Cyprus can develop resources on its continental shelf. It’s not a company issue,” Pyatt told Kathimerini.
As for Turkey’s overall attitude, the U.S. ambassador stressed that Greece and the United States have vital interests to keep Ankara in the West and Europe.
