“What are we afraid of, that out neighbors will take Thessaloniki from us? Now is the chance to close this issue. Skopjans are not cannibals.”
This was the latest declaration from Thessaloniki’s outspoken mayor, Yiannis Boutaris to a meeting of Greece’s Potami (River) party on Thursday.
In remarks carried by FYROM news agency MIA, Boutaris described Thessaloniki as an open city and spoke of his close relationship to FYROM premier Zoran Zaev.
However, he also had strong words over the long-running name dispute, saying it was time to close the issue “because the neighboring country is known by the whole world by its constitutional name”.
“Skopjians are not cannibals just because they were led by [former PM Nikola Gruveski], a radical nationalist who is the same as our ultra-patriots,” he added.
