Ancient Greek Chic Goes on Show in Melbourne

It is not every day that a fashion show features dresses worn in the Bronze Age, but the Hellenic Museum in Melbourne will soon see models take to the catwalk sporting clothes from ancient Greece.

Australians will have a great opportunity to marvel at the magnificent dresses worn by ancient Greek women of the Minoan and Mycenaean civilizations on Friday.

The exhibition — Haute Couture in Ancient Greece: The Spectacular Costumes of Ariadne & Helen of Troy — will start with a launch party on Friday, March 2 as part of the Virgin Australia Melbourne Fashion Festival’s Arts Program 2018. On Saturday, March 3, it will open to the general public.

Recreations of costumes worn by Minoan and Mycenaean women of Bronze Age Greece from 2000 to 1200 BC will be presented at an exclusive exhibition launch party that will include a special runway event with models displaying the ancient garments.

The fashion show will be accompanied by a projection installation of frescoes, and an explanation of the clothes, their history, design and manufacture.

An ancient-inspired cocktail party and preview of the exhibition will follow the runway event. Greek wines and beers along with canapes will be offered too.

The garments have been recreated by Dr. Bernice Jones, who has meticulously analyzed the textiles and styles as seen in sculptures and wall paintings from the Bronze Age.

Visitors will see explanatory drawings of the construction of the garments and hand-woven linen samples of their cloth patterns, bands and trim.

The exhibition will run through April 15. The Hellenic Museum is at 280 William Street, Melbourne, Victoria 3000.

DISCLAIMER: The exhibition launch will include some nudity. The launch event is fully licensed; attendees under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
