Tourists from Turkey, Balkans Flood Thessaloniki for Carnival Weekend

Turkish and Balkan tourists flooded Thessaloniki for the last Carnival weekend, while at the same time trips to Turkey from Greeks resumed reluctantly.
A slight increase in arrivals compared to last year was recorded, according to the president of the Association of Tourist Agencies of Macedonia-Thrace Vyron Theologis, who spoke at the radio station of the Athens-Macedonian News Agency 104.9 FM.
“Thessaloniki is a favorite destination for Turks. They come to visit the city on occasion, and the museum of Kemal Ataturk remains the first choice,” Theologis noted.
Many foreign tourists who choose Thessaloniki combine it with a trip to Veria as part of the pilgrimage following the footsteps of Apostle Paul, Theologis added.
Meanwhile, excursions of Thessaloniki residents to Turkey have resumed, said the president of the association, noting that during the same period last year they were very few.
Specifically, bus trips from Thessaloniki to Constantinople and Adrianople increased by 100 percent from the corresponding period in 2017, but it was around the same level as in 2016, Theologis said.
Regarding favorite Carnival destinations for Thessaloniki residents this year, Xanthi and Patras – famous for their Carnival parades – remained on top, Theologis said. Rethymno, Crete was added to the list this year, due to the publicity the local Carnival celebrations have received in recent years, he added.
