Washington Urges Greece, Turkey to Calm Down

The U.S. State Department has encouraged Greece and Turkey to “de-escalate” current tensions in the Aegean, after a Turkish coast guard vessel rammed a Greek patrol boat on Monday night near the Imia islets.
“Turkey and Greece have long-established diplomatic channels for addressing Aegean issues.
“We encourage all parties to take steps that will de-escalate current situation. As a matter of principle, the U.S. supports the sovereignty of countries in region including Greece and Turkey,” a spokesperson said, according to a news report on state broadcaster ERT.
On Tuesday, the EU warned Turkey of the need to respect the sovereignty of EU member-states.
European Commission spokesman Margaritis Schinas said that the EU “reiterates the need for Turkey to commit unequivocally to good neighborly relations and avoid any kind of source of friction or action directed against member states, which damages good neighborly relations and the peaceful settlement of disputes.”
