Thirty-three Turkish aircraft violated Greek airspace and broke international aviation rules in the first 12 days of February, more than a third of the same number for January alone.
According to data from the Hellenic National Defence Forces General Staff, Monday alone saw 12 aircraft enter Greek Aegean airspace illegally, double last Thursday’s total of five planes.
The almost daily incursions this month follow the 89 Turkish aircraft which encroached upon Greek airspace in January amid repeated incidents near the Imia islets in the Aegean.
Ongoing hostile contact between Turkish and Greek air and sea forces have drawn concern from the U.S. amid more bellicose reactions from Ankara, particularly Tuesday’s outburst by Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
The Turkish leader hit out at Greece and Cyprus about any “miscalculation” in the Aegean or Cyprus.
Athens, in response to Monday night’s ramming of a Greek ship by the Turkish coast guard, summoned Ankara’s ambassador to the foreign ministry on Tuesday.
As well as airspace incursions, Turkish ships have been in almost weekly contact with Greek craft or have intruded upon Greek waters.
Military data reveals almost 2,000 incursions by Turkish forces into Greek waters in 2017, with 290 taking place in May alone.
