Greek-Cypriot composer George Kallis has just won Breakthrough Composer of the Year from the Movie Music UK Soundtrack Awards.

Kallis was also shortlisted for the Composer of the Year awards alongside legendary names like Greek-French Alexandre Desplat and John Williams. Desplat ended up winning the Composer of the Year award, so two Greeks won the most prestigious honors.

Kallis has been writing film soundtracks since 2007, and has been quickly rising in prominence in Hollywood. His scores for 2017 included the score for the historical drama “The Black Prince”, children’s adventure “Albion: The Last Stallion”, and Russian fantasy epic “The Last Warrior”.

According to the Movie Music UK website, “Kallis showed with his music that he is a composer of significant skill and class, and that he has an enormous future ahead of him if he can get the breaks on the right projects”.

After winning this incredible honor, Kallis was also nominated for Breakthrough Composer at the IFCMA awards, the most internationally renowned awards for film music and soundtracks. Alexandre Desplat is also nominated for Composer of the Year at the IFCMA awards for his work on “The Shape of Water” and “Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets”.

The IFCMA awards will be announced on February 22.
