Archbishop Ieronymos: The Role of the Church is Not to Organize Rallies

“The role of the Church is not to organize rallies… It’s role is not related to the role of political parties,” Archbishop of Athens and All Greece Ieronymos said on Tuesday.
The Archbishop spoke at the meeting of the Holy Synod and referred to all current issues, especially the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia name talks and Sunday’s mass protest rally.
“In light of these historical events and developments, the Church can not remain silent and passive,” Ieronymos said, “…and especially when national interests of our country are threatened or even jeopardized.”
The Archbishop said that this is a “sensitive historical moment” and described the talks between Athens and Skopje on the neighboring country’s name as a “great national affair”. He advised everyone to show prudence, sobriety and unity.
“The active presence of the Church in social life prevents the dangers of totalitarianism and anarchy,” Ieronymos said.
