Nafplio residents woke up to an impressive, and slightly scary, phenomenon this week as the full moon caused a low tide which revealed a new beach.
The waters in front of Nea Kios village moved dozens of meters back into the sea on Thursday, the same time a ‘supermoon’ was being observed across the planet.
This unusual low tide was particularly impressive because of its wide extent. The phenomenon is repeated twice a day due to the gravitational attraction of the moon and the sun on Earth, as well as the rotation of the celestial bodies.
The phenomenon that occurred in Nafplio is likely connected with the moon’s current close proximity to Earth.
