Greek Credit Card Lottery Offers €1M in Tax-Free Prizes

More than five million Greek taxpayers on Tuesday will be taking part in a lottery for December credit card transactions which will dispense €1 million ($1.2 million) to 1,000 lucky winners who will receive a €1,000 tax-free bonus each.
It is the third such monthly lottery in Greece with consumers receiving more tickets than usual as it includes Christmas shopping transactions. Consumers receive virtual tickets depending on their respective transactions during the month.
The lottery began last December as a way of promoting the use of plastic money in Greek transactions, something which has been rising in the past year.
There was also a yearly lottery draw for transactions over the whole 12 months, held in late December.
According to Finance Ministry data, credit and debit card transactions in December 2017 rose to €2.8 billion due to the Christmas shopping season. The value of overall plastic transactions of 2017 was over €25.5 billion.
December’s card payments were the highest in 2017, surpassing summer months July (€2.197 billion) and August (€2.153 billion) — traditionally the strongest months due to tourism.
