Greece to Present Skopje with Draft 'Macedonia' Deal

On the eve of a seniorĀ UN mediator’s visit to Greece, Foreign Minister Nikos Kotzias has revealed that Athens is working on a draft deal on the naming dispute that will be presented to Skopje in February.
The Greek proposals will deal with all open issues relating to the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM)’s name and irredentism, Kotzias said.
In an interview on Greek state TV on Monday night, Kotzias claimed the draft plan will include a special chapter on dealing with irredentism, with references to the international and regional position of the country and with a positive agenda for developing bilateral relations.
The minister also rejected a “piecemeal” approach to the problem as unrealistic and stressed that the government is aiming for a settlement of all issues in a single comprehensive agreement.
“What matters is that the word used in a composite name is not in English, but in Slavic,” Kotzias added.
UN mediator Matthew Nimetz will hold meetings with the Greek leadership on Tuesday and Wednesday before he departs for Skopje.
