Greek Church Holds Emergency FYROM Meeting

Greek media are reporting that an emergency meeting of the country’s senior Orthodox clergy has been called over the ‘Macedonia’ name dispute.
The reports follow public differences, emerging from within the Greek Orthodox Church, over Sunday’s major rally in Thessaloniki, against the use of the term ‘Macedonia’ in any future name for Greece’s northern neighbor.
There also appears to be uncertainty over whether church authorities in Athens should endorse a large rally expected in the Greek capital on Feb. 4, to protest the use of the term ‘Macedonia’ by the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM).
Greek newspaper Kathimerini reported on Tuesday that the Holy Synod emergency meeting was called by head of the church, Ieronymos II, the Archbishop of Athens and All Greece.
Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras and his FYROM counterpart Zoran Zaev are to meet in Davos, Switzerland on Wednesday, amid UN-backed efforts to resolve the more-than-25-year dispute.
Greece views use of ‘Macedonia’ by FYROM as a claim on Greek territory, identity and history.
The impasse has seen FYROM blocked from both EU and NATO membership.
