Farmers angry over austerity policies, blocked roads in central Greece on Monday, in what could prove to be the start of a series of nationwide actions.
Dozens of tractors and other agricultural vehicles, many flying flags, were parked on the major E65 highway in Karditsa, causing traffic disruption.
One activist, Aris Polygenis, was quoted by the Athens-Macedonian News Agency as saying: “It is the beginning of mobilizations, and this mobilization will become the precursor for all of Greece.”
“We are giving the message that we will not go back if our demands are not honored,” he added.
President of the Federation of Rural Associations in Larissa, Rizos Maroudas, said farmers would take to the roads in Trikala on Wednesday with those in Larissa joining on Thursday.
