A Pakistani man who claimed to be under threat in his home country for his humanist beliefs, had his claim to asylum in the U.K. rejected because he failed to correctly answer questions on ancient Greek philosophers.

British newspaper the Guardian reported on Wednesday that Hamza bin Walayat, who claimed to have faced persecution because he renounced Islam, was denied sanctuary by Home Official officials.

It is reported that his knowledge of humanism and ancient Greek philosophers was not enough to satisfy asylum officials.

In a Home Office document reproduced by the Guardian, British officials told Walayat: “When you were informed by the interviewing officer that he was referring to Plato and Aristotle, you replied: ‘Yeah, the thing is because of my medication that is strong I just forget stuff sometimes’.”

The officials concluded: “Your knowledge of humanism is rudimentary at best and not of a level that would be expected of a genuine follower of humanism.”
