Greek Police Arrest Turkish Army Officer after Asylum Status Suspended

The Turkish army officer who was granted asylum was arrested on Monday after the Administrative Court of Appeals upheld the Greek State’s request to suspend his asylum status.
Suleyman Ozkaynakci is the co-pilot of the helicopter with which eight Turkish military staff fled to Alexandroupolis after the failed coup attempt in Turkey in July 2016.
The eight men applied for political asylum and Ozkaynakci was the one who was granted asylum last week by the Independent Asylum Committee.
However, the chairman of the Court of Appeals, Evgenia Mylonopoulou, temporarily suspended the decision to grant asylum.
Mylonopoulou accepted the Greek State’s request for reasons of public interest but also for the interests of the officer himself.
The interim order also states that the administration (state) will abstain from any action aimed at the departure of the Turkish soldier from Greece.
The interim injunction is in force until a decision is taken on the application for suspension lodged by the Greek State.
