Thessaloniki Holocaust Museum Construction Under Way

Preparatory work for the construction of the Holocaust Museum in Thessaloniki, is expected to begin over the next few days.
Plans are due to be completed in 2018 so that a tender for the project can be held, the president of the Jewish Community David Saltiel said on Monday speaking to the Athens-Macedonian News Agency’s radio station.
He stressed the importance of the signing of the presidential decree and its publication in the Government Gazette, as this gives a green light for the start of the process to build the Holocaust Museum.
“It is feasible to start construction in January. Based on the law, we need to know the substrate in order to produce the structural designs. Then the details of the project must be written up and a tender held,” he noted.
He estimated that the museum will be completed towards the end of 2019, and showcase all the known and unknown sides of Jewish history and the history of Thessaloniki. It will be as important a project as the Stavros Niarchos Foundation’s cultural centre in Athens, he explained.
The museum will be a six-storey circular building of metal and glass, with a height of 32 metres. It will be constructed in a lot owned by GAIAOSE, on the symbolic spot where the death trains set off on their journeys during WWII, ultimately carrying 55,000 Jews from Thessaloniki to Nazi concentration camps.
