Holding Greek flags and singing the national anthem, hundreds of Greek Canadians welcomed Giannis Antetokounmpo of the Milwaukee Bucks to Toronto.

The Toronto Star says that there is an undeniable connection between Giannis and basketball fans around the world that goes beyond the game.

“I think the biggest connection is his humility,” says Toronto physician Frank Karantonis, who spearheaded an Antetokounmpo appreciation night at the Air Canada Centre on Monday.

“He grew up very poor in Greece, in Athens, and just to make some money to give back to the family he would sell CDs on the street, he would wipe windows. (It’s) just his connection to his family and his loyalty to his country.

“There’s just something about his humility that connects us with him and wanting to achieve our dreams some day.”

Karantonis had a group of more than 700 at Monday’s Raptors-Bucks game, set up through the Greek Canadian Games organization that holds an Olympics-style, multi-sport celebration for Greek youth each summer.

For the record, Toronto Raptors beat the Milwaukee Bucks 131-127 in overtime, despite Giannis having scored 26.
