Cretan Wine Amphorae Discovered in Pompeii

Archaeologists working in Pompeii have accidentally discovered several wine amphorae that are believed to be 2000 years old and in very good condition.

According to the director of the Archaeological Park of Pompeii, Massimo Osanna, the discovery was a “happy accident,” because the priceless objects were found while restoration and preservation work was taking place.

The 15 amphorae were found behind the famous House of the Gladiators. Based on their distinctive shape, archaeologists believe  they are from Crete and would have contained sweet Cretan wine; a favorite of the Romans.

At least one of the findings has inscriptions that looks like Greek, and  will provide further clues to what it contained and where it was from.

According to Osanna, laboratory work will be carried out to try and determine what the other amphorae contained, although likely candidates include more wine, olive oil or the Roman “garum”; a fermented fish sauce.
