Giorgos Voutsis-Vogiatzis; son of President of the Greek Parliament Nikos Voutsis, was among the supporters of convicted terrorist Dimitris Koufodinas who were waiting for him outside Korydallos Prison when he got a furlough, on Thursday.
Koufodinas, who is serving a life sentence, was convicted for the murder of at least 11 of the 23 victims of the November 17 terrorist organization. He received a 48-hour furlough from the prison board, according to the law.
The convict was smiling when he walked out of the prison gate, where relatives, friends and supporters rushed to embrace him or shake his hand.
Among them was Voutsis-Vogiatzis, beside a young man who had been arrested previously along with members of terrorist group ‘Conspiracy of the Cells of Fire,’ but set free on insufficient evidence.
Giorgos Voutsis-Vogiatzis, is a well-known anarchist. In 2007 he was arrested and convicted for bank robbery in Athens. He claimed he did it for ideological reasons because he is against the capitalist banking system. His father had appeared as a defence witness in his trial.
He was released in August 2010; having served 17 months working in the prison press. Since then he has been active in demonstrations and anti-authoritarian acts.
In 2016, Voutsis-Vogiatzis found himself in the spotlight again, when he was detained at a London airport on his way to Mexico. His name was in the lists of the British MI6 and the CIA for suspected terrorist activities. At the time the young man had claimed that he was “abducted” by authorities.
When reporters asked Voutsis about his son’s act to embrace Koufodinas, the House Speaker answered, “No comment”.
