Greek Deputy Minister Proposes Heroin Legalisation For Medical Purposes

As with morphine, heroin is also a psychotropic substance and should be legal, but always under strict state control, said Deputy Rural Development Minister Yiannis Tsironis.
In an interview with Ta Nea newspaper published on Friday, Tsironis said that, “All psychotropic substances; even heroin, must be legal, depending on their risk and always under strict control of the state, as is the case with morphine.”
A few days earlier, Tsironis had proposed the legalization of cannabis, saying that citizens could pay a fee to the state and cultivate cannabis on their balconies, if they wish.
Speaking about drugs in general, the deputy said that all his proposals are his personal opinions, arguing that banning drugs does nothing to limit their use, especially when it comes to young people. He further argued that drugs are like weapons in the hands of traffickers.
However, Tsironis clarified that his proposal is limited to heroin provided for medical purposes to patients only inside hospitals. He argued that if people are not forced to search for heroin out on the street, the illegal drug rings will cease to exist. If it is legal, he said, heroin will not be sold outside of schools.
