Greek Cypriot Finally Marries the Turkish Cypriot Love of His Life

A special kind of love story was brought to light by the Turkish newspaper Havantis, between the Greek Cypriot Panagiotis Andreou, and the Turkish Cypriot Hatice Giser.
They were both born and raised in Rizokarpaso; a village in the Turkish-occupied Cyprus, and fell in love when they were still teenagers.
However, they couldn’t admit to their love publicly at that time, because of the political situation on the island and their religions. Their families’ disagreed to their marriage and they eventually went separate ways.

At the age of 16, Hatice married a Turkish Cypriot man; 21 years her senior, and they left Cyprus and went to live in London.
After seven years of marriage the couple had a child; but were later divorced due to infidelity from her husband’s part, when their daughter was still an infant.
She returned to her family’s house in Cyprus and stayed there for 15 years, since she chose not to get married again.
In the meantime Panagiotis; who had also been married and divorced, was living in his family’s home in Rizokarpaso.

Hatice and Panagiotis had seen each other 5 years prior to this; after being separated for years, and realized then that their unfulfilled teenage love had not been forgotten.
Their parents’ once again were opposed to their decision, but despite that, they decided to get married and live together this time.
The wedding was held in the Greek side of the island of Cyprus, and the couple; along with Hatice’s daughter from her first marriage, have been living in a house in Agia Triada since then.
