Damage to Greece-Turkey Border Fence in Evros, Northern Greece

Evros region (northern Greece) authorities discovered huge holes underneath the wire fence of the Greece-Turkey border, suspecting they are used for migrant smuggling from the neighboring country.
However, according to Turkish newspaper Edirne Haberci, the holes were dug because heavy rainfall is expected in the near future, so the water must be flushed to prevent flooding.
The particular part of Evros was a passing point for smugglers and people traffickers, for years. The refugee influx in the beginning of the decade forced Greek authorities to raise the fence in 2012, somehow curbing the flow.
The fence is 10.3 km long and 3 meters high.
