Parts of the Athens Riviera Reopened After Oil Pollution Disaster

A beach coated in oil has now been cleaned, government says

The Greek government has announced that a large section of the Athens Riviera has been cleaned and returned to public use following the oil spillage caused by the sinking of Agia Zoni II tanker, in early September.
“A picture is a thousand words,” said Shipping Minister Panagiotis Kouroumblis to the assembled reporters at a seemingly clean beach in Palaio Faliro.

Kouroumblis added that the Piraeus coastline will also be ready by Thursday.
He acknowledged that he was under enormous pressure following the sinking, but he claimed that due to the coordinated efforts of the ministry and local authorities the spillage was contained.
