Greek Golden Girl Stefanidi Named European Athlete of the Year

Greek Olympic pole vault champion Katerina Stefanidi was named female European Athlete of the Year at the 2017 Golden Tracks award ceremony on Saturday.
“Only the nomination and the fact that I reached the top 3 of Europe for the second consecutive year is very important to me and my coach”, Stefanidi said after the ceremony in Lithuania.
“I have demonstrated consistency at high level in my performance in recent years and this is recognized,” she added.
German world javelin champion Johannes Vetter won the honor among male athletes.
The winning athletes were decided by votes from the fans, media, European Athletics Member Federations as well as an expert European Athletics panel, with the results from each group of voters counting for one quarter of the athletes’ final score.
Stefanidi won the gold medal at the 2016 Olympic Games with a jump of 4.85 meters.
She is the current World Outdoor (2017), European Outdoor (2016) and Indoor (2017) champion and a World Indoor Championships medallist.
She has won a total of seven medals in all major international athletics championships.
