Archaeologists are Fighting a Battle to Defend the Country, Says Skourletis

“Yes, to investments but with rules that apply to everyone,” Interior Minister Panos Skourletis stated on Thursday, referring to the stance adopted by Greece’s Central Archaeological Council regarding the planned investment on the site of the former airport at Hellinikon.
Addressing parliament, Skourletis underlined that the archaeologists “were fighting a battle to defend the country” and accused main opposition New Democracy of hypocrisy and political pettiness.
“In this country with its great traditions and a culture that is a living and enduring asset, we must protect national heritage and not try to flout the legal framework for political ends,” said Skourletis.
Referring to the gold mining investment in Skouries, Chalkidiki, he stressed that investments were welcome but the laws and rules could not be “selectively” applied.
Skourletis also added that, not many people are aware that when given a tour of Skouries by residents opposed to the investment, the current main opposition leader Kyriakos Mitsotakis, had compared the forest to a “paradise” and promised to do everything in his power to prevent “this disastrous investment”
“This statement is available and will be released in a few days,” said Skourletis.
