Buried in Mud: Samothraki in State of Emergency

Greek authorities declared Samothraki in a state of emergency in the aftermath of Monday’s catastrophic rainstorms, that literally caused many parts of the island to be buried in mud.
In Chora, tons of mud have covered parts of the town. The town health center is completely destroyed, while a wall of the town hall has collapsed, Mayor Thanasis Vitsas told SKAI television.
On Tuesday, army personnel started clearing the sludge from the health center building and the surrounding streets.  However, water supply has been cut in most parts of the island, while the road network has suffered damages.  A bridge at the 5th kilometer point of Kamariotissa-Lakkoma road collapsed, resulting in a complete cut off of the southern part of the island.
As access to schools is almost impossible, they will remain closed throughout the week.
The Minister of Infrastructure and Transport Christos Spirtzis, went to Samothraki with the General Secretary for Civil Protection Yannis Kapakis; the General Secretary of Infrastructure Giorgos Dedes, and Deputy Secretary General of the Ministry of Health Stamatis Vardars, in order to assess the situation and to coordinate the necessary steps to deal with the damage after the unprecedented storms that struck the island.
