The final report on the death of four people in the controversial car crash on February 26 says that the speed of the Porsche the moment it collided with a stopped car was 320 kilometers per hour.
The fatal crash of the speeding car with two passengers that hit the parked car of a woman and her child at a rest stop on the National Athens-Lamia Highway was initially attributed to faulty tires.
However, after months of investigation, experts concluded that the driver of the Porsche was running at a speed of 320 km/h and lost control of the vehicle when he tried to pass another car. The Porsche veered off the highway, entered the rest stop, and hit the parked Honda with such force that both cars exploded immediately.
The driver was Giorgos Vakakis, 24, and his passenger Andreas Georgakopoulos. The woman in the parked car was Apostolia Patmanoglou, 33, and her 3-year-old son Pavlos.
According to the final report, experts concluded that the four Porsche tires were in good condition, did not show any evidence of overheating to the extent that they were ‘melting’ since their tread was 6 mm thick when a minimum of 1.6 mm is acceptable. Experts said that none of the tires began to dissolve due to overheating and no hole was created by an object on the road surface.
Police sources used another video from a security camera showing that the watch for the crash began to count down when the Porsche attempted to overtake a Mercedes. In the 2.5-second video, the left tire appears to touch the cement median, not to be able to withstand the strain and starting to blow.
