Two Arrested after Pumping Oil from Sunken Tanker that Polluted Athens Coastline

Greek authorities have arrested the captain and chief engineer of the tanker ‘Lassaia’ after discovering that it has been pumping oil from the shipwreck, Agia Zoni II, that was responsible for the oil spill and polluting the Athens coastline.

While the tanker was assisting in the cleanup operation of the  shipwreck, it was also pumping oil from Agia Zoni II.  The Ministry of Shipping announced on Thursday that the captain and chief engineer of the tanker have been arrested on fuel smuggling charges, and the Port Authority, which carried out the preliminary investigation, has seized the vessel and the men arrested are to be brought before the Piraeus Prosecutor.
