Frappé, the famous Greek iced coffee beverage, will be honored in this year’s Thessaloniki International Fair, celebrating 60 years as an essential accessory of many Greeks’ lifestyle.
In this year’s 82nd TIF, the cherished frappé will have a museum of its own in the premises.
It was 60 years ago, in the 22nd Thessaloniki International Fair, that the Greeks’ favorite coffee drink was first introduced.
This year, the TIF in cooperation with coffee beans maker Nestlé, will present the “Frappé powered by Nescafé” museum, honoring this particular moment, which has influenced the creation of one of the beloved habits of Greeks, sitting and sipping a well-stirred frappé with plenty of foam on top.
Attendees can visit the museum at kiosk 11 and then the terrace – the outside room “Emilios Riadis” – which will be transformed into a beach bar, with real sand, umbrellas and summer breeze. And, of course, enjoy a cold frappé.
More importantly though, visitors can learn all about the “birth” of the famous coffee drink. Lore has it that during the 22nd TIF, Dimitris Vakondios, an employee of Nestlé’s representative in Greece, wanted to make an instant coffee, but he was out of hot water.
Because of the high temperature and the lack of hot water, Vakondios improvised: He put two tablespoons of instant coffee in a shaker with cold water and shook it feverishly for the coffee to dissolve. Thus, simply and unexpectedly, frappé was discovered.
The Frappé Museum is dedicated to the history of coffee, the myths and the truths that accompany it, as well as its production processes.
