After 3-Day Battle, Wildfire North of Athens Brought Under Control

After a three-day battle with the blaze that destroyed a huge forest area and dozens of homes north of Athens, there is growing optimism that the flames are finally brought under control.
On Wednesday morning there was no active front in the area between the towns of Kalamos and Kapandriti, but firefighters were performing overhaul operations to prevent fire from rekindling.
Greece’s General Secretary of Civil Protection, Yiannis Kapakis, said on Wednesday that he remains mildly optimistic about the progress made on extinguishing the fires in the Kalamos, a coastal resort, before spreading to three more towns damaging at least 20 homes and burning thousands of hectares of pine forest.
Greece on Tuesday pleaded for assistance from European neighbors to help battle wildfires.
In total, 146 fires have broken out across Greece since Sunday, including fires near the town of Amaliada in the western Peloponnese and on the tourist island of Zakynthos.
