Meet the ‘Greeters’: Smiling Volunteers Assisting Tourists in Athens

They have sprung up on the streets of Athens, welcoming their guests. They are the “Greeters” and their moto is “May I help you?”
In the middle of summer, more than 100 volunteers are on foot in the Greek capital to inform tourists, as part of a new visitor reception program.
With especially designed t-shirts, a badge and a hat, Greeters are ordinary Athenians of all ages.

They assist at information points of the municipality of Athens, at Dionysiou Areopagitou Street, Syntagma Square and Athens International Airport.
Greeters will share smiles and informative material until October 15, by when it is estimated that they will have handed-out more than 50,000 maps, along with a flier providing tips on sightseeing, opening hours, directions, transport and much more.

The Greeters program is designed to welcome the 5 million or so visitors from around the world, expected to come to Athens this year.
It is implemented by the Athens Tourism Partnership, which includes the Municipality of Athens, AEGEAN airlines and the Athens International Airport.
