Mykonos Demands Two More Hours to Party

The mayor of Mykonos island has appealed to the Greek government to repeal the law that demands all music at bars and night clubs in the cosmopolitan island to stop at 3am, allowing for an extension till 5 am.
In a letter addressed to relevant ministries in Athens, Konstantinos Koukas says that local businesses are “trapped in the whirlwind of confusing laws”.
He cites a 1996 police order which stipulates that music during the summer season is allowed until 3 am at indoor venues and up to 2 am at outdoor venues. By contrast, he says, there is a 2009 decree that allows operation until 5 am.
“This inconsistency in the provisions has created confusion for businessmen in Mykonos, who are threatened with harsh fines and closure of business if the police record the violation three times”, the mayor says.
Shutting down the island’s clubs at 3 am is inapplicable to one of the most tourist destinations in the world, which also pours money into the frail Greek economy.
Hundreds of international celebrities visit the cosmopolitan island every summer and wild partying is part of its culture.
