Alexander Payne’s ‘Downsizing’ Will Open Venice Film Festival

Alexander Payne‘s “Downsizing” will be screened on the opening night of the prestigious Venice Film Festival as one of the films in competition.

Though it still has some time before its theatrical release, with an expected release date of December 22 of this year, the movie is already being thought of as a potential Oscar contender by those who have seen it and has critics and movie fans alike waiting in anticipation. The film stars Kristin Wiig and Matt Damon as a couple in a near-future world where “downsizing” humans is considered the only way to halt environmental damage.

The international competition jury that will be judging the films, including “Downsizing”, will be led by acclaimed actress Annette Benning. In addition to Benning, French-Greek actress Anna Mouglalis will be on hand to give away the festival’s main prizes.

The prizes of the Venice Film Festival include a Golden Lion for best film as well as a Silver Lion grand jury prize.

Payne’s “Downsizing” will premiere in Venice on August 30; the festival will run until September 9.
