On Monday, Margaritis Schinas, a European Commission spokesman said that Brussels is investigating if a specific third-party levy the government continues to impose on computers and tablets with a RAM memory that exceeds 4 GB complies with the outline of the bailout, as the bailout agreement in Greece declares that all third-party levies in the country will be reduced until finally abolished completely.
One item that was previously omitted from the levy tax is smartphones, which was removed from the items for which the levy applies by Culture Minister Lydia Koniordou.
However, after a bill by the Culture Ministry became a law last week, it is uncertain if the “tablet levy” will now also start applying to smartphones, as the Culture Ministry has left the levy open for the popular devices instead of exempting them as previously.
Following the bill being passed, the Hellenic Association of Mobile Application Companies (SEKEE) spoke out against the measures of the Culture Ministry on Tuesday saying it “comes on top of a series of other levies with a clear character against growth, particularly damaging the sectors that produce cultural content.”
