U.S. Supports Cyprus' Right to Search for Oil and Gas in EEZ

The U.S. government supports the right of Cyprus to search for oil and natural gas in its exclusive economic zone (EEZ) and discourages actions that increase tensions in the region, according to the mignatiou.com website.
According to the report, a U.S. State Department representative answered a question regarding the threats of Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan against Cyprus and against companies cooperating with the Republic of Cyprus for exploration and drilling in the Cypriot EEZ.
According to the U.S. Department of State spokesman: “The United States policy on the EEZ of Cyprus is long-standing. We recognize the right of the Republic of Cyprus to develop its resources in its Exclusive Economic Zone. We continue to believe that the oil and gas resources of the island, like all its resources, should be distributed fairly between the two communities as part of a comprehensive settlement. We continue to discourage actions that increase tensions in the region.”
A Cypriot government official told mignatiou.com that the drilling rig West Capella arrived in the Plot 11 area two hours before the scheduled time. “It is at the point of drilling in the “Onisiforos West -1″ without any problems.”
The Republic of Cyprus government has issued a NAVTEX announcing that it has declared a 500-meter safety zone around the “West Capella” drilling rig in Plot 11 of the Cyprus EEZ. The Cypriot NAVTEX says entry to this zone is forbidden for any reason.
French company Total is to drill in the area. Two French Navy frigates taking part in the Lebanese Peacekeeping Force are in the port of Larnaca and in the morning they will sail to the point of drilling.
