Minister of Home Affairs and POE-OTA Fail to Resolve Issues – Trash Remains Piled in the Streets

The meeting of Minister of Interior Panos Skourletis with the POE-OTA (Federation of Contract Employees of Cleaning) concluded without any significant effect on Saturday afternoon, after the legislative regulation was announced on Monday by the Minister of the Interior on the issue of contract staff.
The President of the Federation commented that the government’s regulation is far from what the POE-OTA is calling for, and added that the legal advisers and the executive board will now take up the matter.
Until the trade union resolves the stalemate the accumulation of waste in the urban centers is expected to remain since the strike is not expected to be lifted before a resolution is reached.
The garbage piling up in the streets is a direct threat to public health in combination with high temperatures, which are expected to rise further in the coming days, creating the perfect cocktail for authorities to have concern.
The Ministry of Health, with its urgent document, notified to the municipalities, highlighting the dangers to public health from the continued non-collection of rubbish and has called in particular for the removal of garbage from “sensitive areas” such as hospitals, nurseries, schools, nursing homes and disinfection of the bins.
