Former U.S. Vice President Joe Biden, who is in Athens for the Concordia Europe Summit, met on Tuesday with President of the Republic Prokopis Pavlopoulos and opposition leader Kyriakos Mitsotakis.
While at the reception in the Presidential Mansion, Biden stressed that the success of Greece is important to the United States and it is essential that the country emerges from the economic crisis and develops a leading role in the region.
Biden also said that current U.S. Vice President Michael Pence shares the same feelings about Greece, arguing that the U.S. attitude towards Greece has not changed.
The former vice president also visited the New Democracy headquarters and met with party chief Mitsotakis. The two men had an extensive discussion on issues of bilateral, regional and global interest.
The New Democracy president stressed the role of Greece as a factor of stability in an increasingly unstable region, while Biden stressed the importance of Greece for American geostrategic interests.
Biden and Mitsotakis also discussed the Turkish provocations in the Aegean, the latest developments on the Cyprus issue and expressed their concern over the growing tensions in the Western Balkans.
