Greek PM Tsipras Rounding Up Support for Greek Debt Relief

With the next eurozone meeting just around the corner Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras has put his charm on this week, speaking on the telephone with French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Angela Merkel as well as European Council’s President Donald Tusk, says an ekathimerini report. The Greek PM’s efforts are to round up support for Greece’s desperately-needed debt relief.
The next scheduled meeting of the eurozone’s finance ministers falls on June 15, and Athens hopes to secure a guarantee for debt relief after it was rejected at last week’s eurogroup. It will be a tough battle since Germany’s finance minister Wolfgang Schaeuble won’t budge on his debt-relief stance unless Greece takes on stricter Austerity measures.
Without debt relief the country can’t enter Central Bank’s quantitative easing program or tap international markets after the current bailout program expires end of 2018.
European Central Bank chief Mario Draghi crushed hopes on Monday night, after he told European Parliament that the ECB will not consider including Greece in its quantitative easing program before its bailout review is wrapped up and its debt is made sustainable.
