Yorgos Lanthimos at Cannes: ‘The Killing of a Sacred Deer’

Yorgos Lanthimos‘ film “The Killing of a Sacred Deer” will be premiering at the 2017 Cannes Film Festival as part of the festival’s main competition.

Starring Colin Farrell and Nicole Kidman, the film focuses on a successful surgeon and his wife, who clearly have some issues and secrets that are tearing apart their lives. The storyline is innovative and takes plenty of strange twists and turns, as is usual for a Yorgos Lanthimos feature.

A hint of the supernatural seems to be involved as well, as the doctor (Farrell) has a curious relationship with a 16-year old teenager, Martin (Barry Keoghan), who threatens him with somewhat magical repercussions if his demands are not met.

In addition to directing, Lanthimos wrote the script along with Efthimis Filippou. Plenty of Greeks worked behind the camera in this movie as well, including Yorgos Mavropsaridis as the Film Editor and Thimios Bakatakis as Director of Photography.

Though Lanthimos’ movie is the only Greek-directed film in competition, Costas Gavras’ critically acclaimed 1982 feature “Missing” will be screening at the Cinema de la Plage.
