EU Suspends Funding to Unnamed NGO Under Investigation for Sexual Exploitation of Refugees and Corruption

This week, Christos Stylianides, a spokesman for European Commissioner for Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Management announced that the European Union (EU) has suspended funding to a non-government organization (NGO) that provides aid for refugees due to allegations of sexual exploitation and financial corruption.
“Although these remain allegations under investigation, the Commission is taking them very seriously,” Stylianides said in a statement, adding, “We take a zero tolerance approach to any abuse of the rights and personal integrity of all refugees and migrants as well as to any misuse of funds.”
The NGO under investigation was not named and according to Stylianides, the Commission made the Greek authorities aware of the complaint of misconduct by the agency and a case regarding the matter has been submitted for immediate investigation to OLAF, the EU’s anti-fraud office investigation.
“Our primary concern is the welfare of the potential victims. Accordingly, we shall ensure that immediate support is provided to them,” Stylianides said.
