IMF’s Thomsen Welcomes Greece’s Deal With Lenders

Poul Thomsen, director of the IMF’s European Department, welcomed on Tuesday the agreement achieved between the Greek government and its lenders saying it will allow fiscal policy to become more growth-friendly.
Speaking to journalists in a conference call, he said all sides will need to assure the IMF’s Board that there is a common understanding with EU partners about the kind of measures needed for Greek debt relief, adding that the agreement must go hand in hand with a credible strategy on how to restore debt sustainability.
He said the measures agreed with the Greek government will broaden the tax base and allow lower tax rates while reducing pension costs which will allow for measures to support the weaker citizens.
