4-day Celebration Kicks Off the First ‘Griechenland Festival’ in Düsseldorf!

By Aspasia Zontanou
Following the tradition of well-established events like “Japan Fest” and “Frankreich Fest” that take place once a year in Düsseldorf to honor and promote the large Japanese and French Communities, this year marks the premier of the first “Griechenland Festival” (Greek Festival) in Düsseldorf. The event took place from March 30 to April 2.

The Greek General Consul of North Rhine Westphalia, Mr. Gregory Delavekouras, organized the event in cooperation with Düsseldorf’s Mayor Thomas Geißel and the support of the Greek Community.

This event was a four-day celebration in the heart of the old city next to the town hall. There were 22 exhibition stands, placed like an ancient agora, and represented various products from different Greek regions. Products represented were from the Peloponnese Region, Central Greece, Crete, Epirus, Macedonia and more.

Festivities included live music with well-known Greek singer Foteini Darra and members of the Molyvos International Music Festival performing classical music. Also, bands like Rembetology and Baildsa, Folklore Dance companies and others offered a wide ranged program to the audience. Luckily the weather permitted for the shows with sunny, warm days and cool nights.

The Greek community in North Rhine Westphalia, consists of approximately 140,000 Greeks with almost 14,000 living in the capital city of Düsseldorf. Their shared history has helped shape the character of this modern and booming city as they have successfully accomplished full integration into the German society via businesses, schools, churches, and clubs.
