Parliament Agrees to Form Special House Committee to Investigate Yiannos Papantoniou

Convicted for attempting to hide some 1.3 million euros from Greek authorities, Yiannos Papantoniou and his wife Stavroula Kourakou are about to undergo another probe into the past.
This time, the Greek Parliament has decided to initiate a probe into the actions of Papantoniou, who once served as the PASOK defense minister from 2001-2004 and the economy minister from 1996-2001.
MPs from all sides participated in the debate which eventually led to the conclusion that a special House committee should be set up and an investigation should take place. The opposition agreed with the need for the investigation, but noted that they questioned as to the timing of the government’s inquiry.
On Tuesday in Parliament Prime Minister Tsipras stated that he thought that an additional probe would uncover evidence and insights into other financial happenings, such as the Athens stock market bubble in the late 1990s.
